An excellent overview of world history told in am engaging and easy-to-read style. This book is required reading for our homeschooled high-schoolers. In our home school, we take an interdisciplinary approach to teaching the various academic studies, believing that all topics of study are intertwined and connected to each other. This book does the same. It divides human history into segments of discovery: time, earth history, natural history, society and traces the impact that each of these discoveries has on all the areas of human study. Each segment naturally leads chronologically and philosophically into the next segment.
Every few pages is like a stand-alone story, yet all are woven together in the greatest tapestry any author has ever attempted to weave. I learned more from this book than any other I've ever read, and I'm a VERY avid reader. One thing I particularly loved is that, despite its length, and despite the way it grips your interest, it's NOT difficult to put down. That's because it contains SO MANY separate "stories" which are complete in themselves. You can always find a "break point" within a few pages, which will bring the current story to an end, possibly to be further elaborated on later, but nevertheless complete in itself. So the reader is "left hanging" only with a great eagerness to read the next story, not with an unfinished mystery that's frustrating to leave unresolved.
Amazing Points and Discussions: Some of the topics seem logical but others are a surprise at first. But with very interesting detail the author goes from one advancement to the next to describe the journey of man to advance knowledge from geography to social topics. Very informative. I wish many of the details had references to further evaluate some of the topics. Very good book for those that wonder, "where did that come from?"
The first 70% I found interesting however after a while I just used the book as a sleep aid. In the beginning there were many interesting facts about how tools we use in everyday life were developed. Things like time, hours, seconds were very interesting. These had to begin somewhere and Boorstein made it fascinating. Later on........Still I would recommend the book.
A wondrous exploration of discoveries of all kinds. In fact, a celebration of mankind and his voluminous accomplishments. This is all presented in an entertaining way. And, it need not be read in the way presented. Skip around a bit and have some fun. Even take a time-out to read a novel, but this could be your come-back-to-book for the year.Have a great, knowledgeable read all year - however you wish to arrange it!
I agree with other reviewers here who say that this book should be used in classes, instead of the boring, stiff and uninformative bricks we are given in school. Boorstin, an erudite man if there is one, has a unique skill to deliver complex stories in a most readable and interesting way, and probably the secret lies in that he gives us the human dimension. His book is centered on the persons who made all these discoveries, not on the discoveries themselves, and that makes it all the more appealing.I had read his book "The Creators" (another must-read focused on art) and I think the same element is present. In "The Discoverers", Boorstin takes us by the hand and guides us through the history of Man's search for knowledge. And it is a romp. The cast of characters is as varied as humanity itself, from crazy madmen to admirable heroes of knowledge. Among the ones I remember best: Galileo was a great guy, I would have loved to meet him; Newton not, he was not a nice guy (and I couldn't understand any of his thoughts anyway); Paracelsus was a total whacko; Columbus was admirable in his obstination; Linnaeus was great too; but the guy who discovered metabolism was the craziest of them all. Just imagine a guy weighing his body before and after meals, and then weighing... ugh, his excrements to measure the difference. Thank God somebody did it, but it sounds awful.Read this book and you will learn a lot more than in three years of school.
We bought this as a gift for a family member at my husband's urging. He's an English professor and I was afraid it might be a bit dense but it is now on my reading list. I'm enjoying it immensely. It is endlessly fascinating and written in a style that flows from the page. It has given me insight into some really basic things, such as time, mankind's history of keeping track of time. That subject alone covers science, culture, the influence of the environment and religion. I've just started reading it and know it isn't a book I'm going to just glide through but I will certainly finish it. As my husband said, it is a liberal arts education in one book.
Concise history with great interconnections makes for a better understanding of developments in all the fields covered. Ideas and changes all develop in a complex manner but are too often not addressed which leads to a poor understanding of the richness of history. The density of information is wonderful. People become real and understandable. Once a person sees history being about people the drive to learn more history is born. This book is one you will want to share with family and friends. Find a section and enjoy the read then pick another section that interests you and you will find you want to read other sections because of the depth of coverage in the sections you did read.
